Taking a que from the creative direction of Black Belt Magazine, I approached the media kit with a similar gusto for action film posters and comic book covers. That being said, I didn’t want to distract or overwhelm readers either. I decided to go with black and white imagery, doing layered treatments to each one, giving them a sense of movement and grace associated with the martial arts. I employed a bold red for the kit’s headers, evoking the aggressive physicality and implied violence that martial arts are capable of. This duality between serenity and aggression spoke to the dual nature of martial arts. I was very proud of the results and it remains one of my most favorite projects.
